Playing Up Policy

Playing up policy

Bend FC prioritizes player development by aligning players with their appropriate "soccer age" groups during training and games, based on birthdate cutoffs provided by US Youth Soccer and adhered to by the Oregon Youth Soccer Association.

While most players compete within their natural age group, exceptions may be made for certain players to "play up" for developmental reasons. These decisions are made by the Director(s) of Coaching as well as evaluating coaches, with possible input from the club Technical Committee.

"Playing up" opportunities may include attending practices, guest playing, or being officially rostered on an older age group team. However, such decisions consider the developmental interests of both age groups involved.

Evaluation criteria include:

  • Technical Ability
  • Tactical Understanding
  • Physical Ability and Fitness Levels
  • Cognitive, Psychological, Social, and Emotional Abilities
  • Family Dynamic and Parental Understanding

Coaches will only add a younger player to an older team’s roster if the coach believes the player will be a regular starter for the older team.

Exceptions to the guidelines may occur, such as merging age groups due to insufficient players or accommodating new players who join after team formation. The club aims to balance players' need for challenge with their ability to succeed, ensuring that playing up does not overly challenge or frustrate players.

Additionally, players may occasionally have opportunities to develop with younger age groups.

The club acknowledges the changing developmental needs of players and reserves the right to adjust rosters and teams accordingly throughout the season and at any time. Ultimately, decisions are made in the best interest of individual player development and team continuity.
