Turning Challenges into Opportunities: A Message to Athletes and Families about Team Placements

Being selected for a Premier, Select or Comp team is a testament to an athlete's commitment and passion for soccer.  Our coaches invest great care and thought into building teams, considering a variety of factors such as skill, experience, attitude, and team dynamics. These decisions are part of an athlete's journey and in no way defines their future in the sport.  Many of the most accomplished athletes in our organization began their journey on Select or Comp teams, proving that every step in a player's development contributes to their success.

At Bend FC, earning a spot on any team is a significant achievement, reflecting the competitive nature of our programs. Our  teams are guided by outstanding coaches dedicated to fostering growth and development in every player.

We are proud of every athlete who represents Bend FC, and we celebrate the unique path each player takes in their soccer journey. Here are some additional thoughts about player placement:

Stay Positive

Maintaining a positive attitude is key for young athletes, regardless of the team they make. It’s natural to feel disappointed if you don’t make the team you aimed for but channeling that energy into motivation can lead to growth. A positive outlook helps athletes stay focused on their goals, refine their skills, and position themselves for future opportunities.

Use It as Fuel

Being placed on the Select or Comp team can serve as a steppingstone. Athletes can use this experience as motivation to sharpen their skills, enhance their performance, and show their potential. Success comes from perseverance and consistent effort..

Embrace the Experience

The Select or Comp team provides valuable opportunities to gain experience, develop skills, and learn from challenges. Players can focus on honing their strengths and addressing their weaknesses, becoming more well-rounded players. This experience helps deepen their understanding of the game and fosters an appreciation for growth through effort and attitude.

Take Advantage of Opportunities

If the opportunity comes to guest play with other Bend FC teams, jump on it. When your team trains or plays games,  play hard and do your best. Bend FC is fortunate to have outstanding Directors of Coaching who give great counseling when it comes to opportunities and getting better. Use your DOC.

Be a Team Player

Every athlete plays a vital role, whether on the Premier team, Select team, or Comp team. As a coach, I often remind players that Select and Comp  team athletes sometimes just need “more time to cook.” The Premier team may operate at a higher intensity, with fewer mistakes and a faster pace of play, but that's not all coaches are looking for.

By demonstrating reliability, and maintaining a positive attitude, athletes contribute to the success of their team and build a strong foundation for their own development and future player evaluations.

Work Hard

Approach every practice and game with the mindset of earning a spot. Coaches notice effort, dedication, and a willingness to learn. Sometimes, the distinction between teams lies not just in technical skills but also in the ability to perform under pressure at high speeds.

Take advantage of opportunities such as extra practices, instructional videos, or even joining an additional Bend FC team practice to observe and adapt to higher standards. These experiences expose athletes to the pace and precision required at the next level and can accelerate their progress.

Support and Encourage Growth

Athletes, coaches, and families should view team placement as part of the journey, not the destination. Parents should provide encouragement, helping athletes stay motivated. Teammates can uplift one another, fostering a culture of support and camaraderie.

With effort, focus, and a growth mindset, athletes can thrive and achieve success, no matter which team they’re on. Remember, the path to improvement is paved with resilience, hard work, and a commitment to becoming the best version of yourself.
